Philip Glass: The Complete Piano Etudes, by Philip Glass

(Music Sales America). The Twenty Etudes for Piano were composed during the years from 1991 to 2012. Their final configuration into Book 1 and Book 2 was determined by the music itself in the course of its composition. Taken together, they suggest a real trajectory that includes a broad range of music and technical ideas. In the end, the Etudes are meant to be appreciated not only by the general listener, but especially by those who have the ability and patience to learn, play and perform the music themselves. -Philip Glass

BEFORE I discovered Philip Glass and this glorious book of etudes, I'd played piano very casually for 10 years or so (never played consistently and never took lessons). I was in band and always had a strong interest in music, so I was pretty good at picking out melodies by ear and playing simple chords underneath. The problem was that any time I tried to sit down and learn a piece of notated music, I'd just get overwhelmed by all the different moving parts and give up. Always had this feeling that the bar of entry into classical piano literature was too high, like I'd missed out on years of requisite fundamentals so it was pointless to try. Needless to say, I hardly improved over those years.SINCE discovering Philip Glass and this glorious book of etudes, I'm playing piano for literal hours every day just for the joy of it. I feel myself actually developing those techniques I previously thought I'd missed out on. I've honestly fallen in love with the piano. The music itself is sprawling and always interesting, and clearly the work of a genius. What I'd like to highlight is how USER-FRIENDLY these compositions are. Every note is placed in a way that feels comfortable and intuitive. This makes it easy to memorize these pieces and go into a sort of trance as you notice all these details in the harmony that aren't apparent on early listens. It is so incredibly satisfying to play these etudes, and people love to hear them. If you are even slightly decent at piano and want something to push you forward, GET THIS COLLECTION. If you are an advanced pianist, STILL GET THIS COLLECTION because it's full of incredible music that would fit into any repertoire. Some of my personal favorites to play: 2, 5, 9, 10, 14, 17I'll also add: this book is constructed immaculately. Huge pages, intuitively printed to avoid awkward turns, it actually sits flat no matter what pages are opened. This was clearly designed with respect for the consumer.

Unfortunately, despite the music being excellent, the Kindle version is essentially defective. It is a low-resolution scan; most Kindle features are not supported, and only one page can be viewed at a time, in all its low-resolution hideousness. It's essentially useless for actually playing the music, and unpleasant for studying it.Don't bother with the Google Books version, either: it's only slightly better, in that two low-resolution pages can be viewed at once. If you want a digital copy of the (excellent) music, I'd suggest buying a paper copy and scanning it, such is the sorry state of digital editions. If, like me, you made the mistake of purchasing the Kindle version, you can, despite my initially not realizing it, return it; you need to go to "Manage Content", however, rather than to your orders.

The music is obviously 5 stars, and if you're on this page, you know that. The book is close. There was obviously great care put into put into the quality of the materials and the layout of the sheet music. People who have played Glass in the past have been challenged by getting lost in the repetition, but big numbered sections make this easy to read and work with. If I could give 4.5 stars, I would. However, I'd have preferred a spiral bound option and bigger title sections for each etude.

I made the mistake of relying on reviews for this book instead of listening to the Etudes first. While I've heard works from Philip Glass before, I had not listened to these particular pieces. Reviews suggested that an intermediate pianist could play these pieces. I suppose if an intermediate pianist wanted to spend tons of time learning to play these pieces, maybe they could. But when I think of pieces that are good for intermediate pianists, I imagine being able to play them reasonably well without spending inordinate amounts of time attempting them. I am a true intermediate pianist - the kind that buys the books marked intermediate and is unable to play advanced pieces - and playing these pieces correctly, at the speed intended, may not be impossible but would be such a large and time consuming task that I wouldn't attempt it.That being said, while the notes could be a touch larger, the book and paper are very nice, and if I had the ability to play these pieces, I would be satisfied with the purchase.

I bought this book for one specific piece that I heard played on the classical station, and I'm very pleased with it. Beautiful music, not TOO hard, just challenging enough -- and man these pieces get attention when you play them! I do wish the book was spiral bound because it is very thick and it's difficult to get it to stay open, but my solution has been to scan into PDF with my phone and print individual sheets from my printer. I think you can have piano music books spiral bound for you but I haven't looked into that.

Several years ago, I attended a performance of the Etudes played by Maestro Glass himself.I was so impressed with this composition that I wanted to play it for myself. At last, these Etudes are available in print. Thank you Amazon for making them available and thank you Philip Glass for composing them!

I love these etudes! They are somewhat easy to sightread but also pose interesting questions for players. And they are simply breathtaking! The book has large and clear print and can lie flat, which makes it very easy to play from directly.

Whats' not to like if you have some piano chops and like Philip Glass. Like most modern publications it gets high marks in the readability category too.
